Cost per trial

Sample case study for a fictional brand. Figures are illustrative, not real client results.

  1. Problem

The product was strong, but the site attracted little non-brand traffic. Trial sign-ups depended almost entirely on paid campaigns and referrals, and each new customer cost more than the last.

  2. Research

We mapped 400+ search queries by buyer stage, reviewed the ten sites winning them, audited the existing site for technical and content gaps, and studied where visitors dropped off between homepage and sign-up.

  3. Strategy

Own the problem-aware and comparison queries first. Restructure the site into topic clusters, rewrite core pages around outcomes, and shorten the trial flow. Measure against trial starts, not traffic.

  4. Implementation

Rebuilt navigation and internal linking, published 12 comparison and use-case pages, fixed indexation and speed issues, added structured data and simplified the sign-up form from seven fields to three.

  5. Optimization

Monthly review of queries, click-through and conversion. Titles and intros were tested on the highest-impression pages, and older posts were consolidated into stronger guides.

  6. Outcome

In this illustrative scenario, organic sign-ups grew steadily over twelve months and cost per trial fell as content compounded. The lesson: systemic improvements outperformed isolated ones.
